NIGEL WON’T LOSE ANY SLEEP!
Many on the internet were quick to point out that Nigel was a tad lucky to win against the Israeli grandmaster Greenfeld yesterday:
True enough, Black missed that chance to draw. After he did not play it, Nigel never gave him another chance and won quickly enough. Nigel even tweeted about it…
And why should Nigel care about a half-point here or there? After a long and incredibly successful career spanning 30-odd years, Nigel knows that LUCK does not mean very much. Infact, it evens out…sometimes one is lucky, at other times unlucky. When one considers all the half-points lost or won because of luck then the usual count ‘0’. For example, take a look at how UNLUCKY Nigel was against gm Beliavsky at Linares 1992:

People ask how could you do that. Well, you can do that when you’ve been playing, in that case, for almost six hours. My flag was rising, I had a few moves to make, the endgame was winning for me, and I just had to make a decision on what to do.
It wasn’t totally clear to me, so I pushed my king up to e6. Unfortunately that allowed mate in one. I know it is funny – I can hear you laughing about it, and I’m sure your visitors will enjoy it. But these things can happen after six hours, when you are simply tired, physically tired.
Then suddenly your heart rate goes up again, because you have to make a decision, you are pressed for time. It is in moments like this that blunders come.” LINK
