WCC Tickets. The Price is Right?!
Apparently the price of a single-day ticket is 65 euros. Given that the average worker in the Sochi area can not easily afford this, one might ask why go to the trouble of discouraging spectators? Apart from journalists and FIDE delegates who probably get in free, who other than the local residents would be interested in spectating?

MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE ASSYLUM…
It did NOT take long for Kasparov to reply to Putin’s comment about Garry being a mediocre politician. And I am not certain if Kasparov’s line of reasoning would hold up to any scrutiny….IN ANY CASE, c’est la vie!
NIGEL WON’T LOSE ANY SLEEP!
Many on the internet were quick to point out that Nigel was a tad lucky to win against the Israeli grandmaster Greenfeld yesterday:
True enough, Black missed that chance to draw. After he did not play it, Nigel never gave him another chance and won quickly enough. Nigel even tweeted about it…
And why should Nigel care about a half-point here or there? After a long and incredibly successful career spanning 30-odd years, Nigel knows that LUCK does not mean very much. Infact, it evens out…sometimes one is lucky, at other times unlucky. When one considers all the half-points lost or won because of luck then the usual count ‘0’. For example, take a look at how UNLUCKY Nigel was against gm Beliavsky at Linares 1992:
POSITION AFTER 57 MOVES:
White has a huge positional advantage and excellent practical winning chances. Instead, UNBELIEVABLY, Short gets mated in 1-move:
Nigel was philosophical about this loss…
“Actually during this game I created my first chess problem, a helpmate in two, with a unique solution. Really, my first ever chess problem. I played 57.Nd5 (only move leading to mate in two!) 57…f6+ 58.Ke6?? Bc8 mate.
People ask how could you do that. Well, you can do that when you’ve been playing, in that case, for almost six hours. My flag was rising, I had a few moves to make, the endgame was winning for me, and I just had to make a decision on what to do.
It wasn’t totally clear to me, so I pushed my king up to e6. Unfortunately that allowed mate in one. I know it is funny – I can hear you laughing about it, and I’m sure your visitors will enjoy it. But these things can happen after six hours, when you are simply tired, physically tired.
Then suddenly your heart rate goes up again, because you have to make a decision, you are pressed for time. It is in moments like this that blunders come.” LINK

Meanwhile, back in (1945) Berlin…
This last known picture of Hitler was taken approximately two days prior to his death as he stands outside his Berlin bunker entrance surveying the devastating bomb damage. With Germany lying in ruins after six years of war, and with defeat imminent, Hitler decided to take his own life. But before doing so, he married Eva Braun and then penned his last will and testament. The next day in the afternoon on April 30, 1945 Braun and Hitler entered his living room to end their lives.
Later that afternoon the remaining members of the bunker community found Hitler slumped over, and blood spilled over the arm of the couch. Eva was sitting at the other end. Hitler had killed himself by biting down on a cyanide capsule while shooting him self in the head. Eva only used the cyanide capsule. Hitler committed suicide two days before the surrender of Berlin to the Soviets on 2 May, and just over a week before the end of World War II in Europe on 8 May. (via Rare Historical Photos)

DEMOCRACY IN THE EUROZONE
Having lived thru two independence referendums in Quebec, I looked upon Scotland’s attempt at independence with less alarm than many who reside in the EuroZone. Even my wife thought it was not such a good idea…BUT if you accept that you live in a democracy, then you MUST let the people themselves decide their own fate. That goes for Belgium, Spain, Germany…and even the Ukraine. Nothing stays the same forever…the EuroZone was a good idea a long time ago…it too must adapt or disappear.

FUCK THE PARTY!
Yesterday’s visit to the US by Poroshenko was just for photo-opportunities and handshakes. Despite the begging by the Ukraine president, he returns home empty handed. As it should be…there are many who understand that what has happened these past 6 months was just to test Russia to see how close they could get to its borders. When Russia absorbed the Crimea, Putin simultaneously put 750 megatons of fully armed nuclear weapons in the air , 24 hours a day. Russian long range bombers are all over Europe airspace thru the Atlantic. Putin’s message to Obama: don’t cross the red line. While Russia would never win a nuclear confrontation with the US (can there be a winner?), the truth is that neither NATO nor the US are prepared should Russia do a first-strike.

A GAME IN THE LIFE OF PACO…
Spanish superstar Paco Vallejo is currently playing in the Bilbao Masters and I have been following his games. All of Paco’s games are very interesting because he is a fearless fighter and is not afraid to take risks inorder to increase his chances of winning. With either White or Black, it does not matter. Unfortunately, yesterday Paco lost. But that being said, it must be admitted that his opponent, Ponomariov, played a GREAT game! You can replay it either here or here. And I think that Chessgames.com also has it, though it doesn’t seem to work for me…
The players arriving on stage. Ponomariov and Vallejo shaking hands while Anand (far left) is still waiting for his opponent to arrive (Lev Aronian). Paco and Pono have played MANY times before…something like 15 times. They rarely draw when Pono is White (according to my database–NEVER!) and the score is 6 to 2 in the Ukranian’s favour, though Paco has won 2 of the last three times they sat down. On paper Pono looks like a difficult opponent for Paco, but Pono knows that he is playing a fearless grandmaster!
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.h3!? e6!?
Ponomariov is playing Fischer’s favourite 6.h3 against Paco’s Najdorf Sicilian (In the above photo, Paco has replied 6…e6, one of the most popular choices amongst the top grandmasters today)
GM Larry Evans wrote in Modern Chess Openings 10th edition : ”This is a recommendation of Weaver Adams which Fischer adopted with considerable success after he abandoned 6.Bc4.” Two fantastic Fischer wins in this line were against Najdorf (Varna ’62) and Bolbochan (Stockholm ’62), the latter for which Fischer won the brilliancy prize. Both games are fully annotated in Fischer’s My 60 Memorable Games.
Despite Fischer’s successes, the whole line never really caught on until the early 1990’s when White players were running out of ideas on how to play against the heavily analyzed Najdorf variation. Curiously, today 6.h3 is all the rage amongst the top players and almost every top-level tournament has a game or two in this line…just one more example of how much ahead of his time Bobby really was!
7.g4 Be7 8.Bg2 Nfd7 9.Nce2!? Nc6 10.c3
Ponomariov has tried a little analyzed idea (Nce2 and c3) in this particular move order, but one which is frequently seen in some 6.g3 lines. Here Paco should probably play 10…Qc7 first, if he intends to play …h5 at some point, or just the safe 10…castles. INSTEAD, Paco possibly played a bit too ambitiously with…
Not a bad move by any means, but connected with the wrong idea!
At first sight an ugly positional move! But Ponomariov had evaluated the tactics very accurately. Now Paco must play 11…Qc7! and after 12.Ng3 b5!? with a reasonable game and chances for both sides. INSTEAD, Paco played the ‘normal’ looking move…
Now Black is going to be either much worse or even lost!
12.NxN! PxN 13.Nd4!
Probably Paco had overlooked this idea when he went into this line. The Queen attacks the Rook and the Knight attacks the pawn on c6. Apparently Paco thought for about 30 to 40 minutes here, trying to find a way out…there is really no choice but to put the Rook on a very exposed square (c5).
As Pono explained after the game (the video-interview is below), he had originally intended to simply castle here and to follow up with f4, with good attacking chances. But then he found a much more energetic line, one with a clever scorpion-sting on the 16th move…
14.b4!! Rxc3 15.Bb2 Rc4
Black’s move have been forced
Ouch!! This is what Ponomariov had forseen when he played 14.b4. Taking the Knight gets mated by force after 17.Qh5+ Kf8 1 8.Qh8+Kf7 19.Qxg7+Ke8 20.Qg6+ Kf8 21.Bg7+ etc
In the game continuation, Paco played the best defence (16…Qb6) and tried to valently hold things together, but combined with time pressure the task was too difficult. Ponomariov scored the full point. Paco resigned on the 33rd move. Elite players like Ponomariov never let their opponents off the hook…
The world needs Harry back!
The civilized world seems to be spiralling out of control. There are wars everywhere! Our grandmothers are being spied on. American and Canadian civil police forces now use military-grade tactics and arms against peaceful protestors. Terrorism is spreading and thousands of our fellow citizens are lost and are heading to the middle-east for training and to fight against failed American and British foreign policy. Obama wants us to believe there are good terrorists and bad terrorists. Hardly any country respects international law or fundamental human rights, and pharmaceutical giants aren’t doing nearly enough about the deadly Ebola virus because they don’t see enough profit to be had.
If you are like me, then I need to keep things prioritized : FUCK the politicians’ BULLSHIT! They are ones that created this mess. I want my LIFE back to when things were simple: is human dignity and a little respect for basic law and order asking too much? Today, some 40 years since those Dirty Harry films first appeared, what the world needs most is a hard-ass like Harry to end all the bullshit.
Clint, go get Harry’s gun and make things right again!
This is no joke! Although a bit dated (the story goes back to around the beginning of the year) this story proves that nothing is sacro-saint anymore in Obama’s America. My God! Using a squirrel to stab your husband because there was no beer in the house? Walt Disney must be rolling over in his grave…

A game in the LIFE of Paco
Paco arriving at the board yesterday against Anand. The spanish superstar is not one for suits and ties…preferring to dress casually.
Paco looking into space, trying to remember the theory…apparently Vishy had played a line that was a bit of a surprise. Paco played a good and interesting game…until he lost it all on the 26th move.
Paco, on his twitter, lamenting his 26th move, that threw everything away. He writes here that 26.Nc6 would have drawn with ease…a game to forget!
The critical position. After 25 moves of play. Paco has sacrificed an exchange, but his strong pawn on c7 is full compensation. In the game the Spanish superstar played 26.Nb5?, overlooking that after 26…a6! the planned 27.Na7 loses the Knight after 27…R8xc7! 28.BxR RxB and the Knight has no exit. Paco therefore played 27.Nd4, but after 27…Ne4! Black picks up the c-pawn with a won ending.
Paco should have played 26.Nc6! and after 26…a6 just bring in his King and wait. Neither side can make any progress and the game is a sort of positional stalemate. A draw is the correct result. Note that 26…Ne4 is met with 27.Be5! The position after 26.Nc6! is worth careful study…
