CH Portugal 2015.9.17  Position after White’s 28th move (28.f3). Be forever wary of Bishops and pins…

BLACK TO PLAY AND CRUSH!

CH Portugal 2015.9.13  An interesting position.  Black seems to be getting the upper hand, as White’s Queen is being chased from the centre by Black’s critters.  At the same time, the White Knight on d4 needs protection…White considered 19.Qf3!? NxN 20.QxN BxB 21.KxB Qd5+ 22.f3, but rejected it as being a bit too passive. The game continued in a more interesting fashion:

19.Ndxe6+!? NxN 20.NxN Nc7!

A strong pin!  Did White overlook it?  Apparently so, as in the game White played the desperate 21. Bxh6+?! Kxh6 22.Qe3+ Kg7 23.Nxe7 Bxg2 24.Qg5 Bxf1! and Black won easily enough. HOWEVER, in the position above, White has a saving resource! Do you see it?

WHAT IS WHITE’S BEST LINE?

gm  Berg, Emanuel

Bundesliga  Dortmund 2015.9.20  Position after 20 moves of a sharp variation of the French Defence.  White has sacrificed a pawn for rapid development; Black still has his King in the centre, uncertain of its safety.  However, in the position above, this is the least of Black’s worries…

WHITE TO PLAY AND CRUSH!

gm  Pap, Misa

 im  Lampert, Jonas

Bundesliga  Dortmund 2015.9.19  Position after White’s 24th move (24.Qxb7).  White is a bit up in material, but this is too hefty a price allowing Black to build up an armada on the other side of the board…

BLACK TO PLAY AND CRUSH!

CH Portugal 2015.9.17  Silva, Luis–Rego, Pedro:  28…Qxe3+ 29.Qxe3 Rxd3 0-1

CH Portugal 2015.9.13  Dias, Paulo–Ferreira, Jorge: 21.Rd1! Bxd5 (21…NxN?! 22.Qd4!) 22.Qe3! Qd7! 23.Qxh6+ Kg8 24.h5! Qc6 25.Bxd5 Nxd5 26.hxg6 fxg6 27.Rxd5 Qxd5 28.Qxg6+ with a perpetual check.  Efforts by Black to avoid this involve great risks.

Bundesliga  Dortmund 2015.9.20  Berg, Emanuel–Jochens, Arne: 21.c4 1-0 Ouch!  The Knight on e4 is gone…

Bundesliga  Dortmund 2015.9.19   Lampert, Jonas–Pap, Misa: 24…Nf3+ 25.gxf3 Rg6+ 26.Kf1 Qh1+ 27.Ke2 Qxf3+ 28.Kf1 Qh3+ 29.Ke2 Qf3+ 30.Kf1 Rh6 0-1
